    FAQ

    1. Who is Dr Wheatgrass?

"Dr Wheatgrass" doesn't actually exist as a person. It is however, our trademarked brand. However, to all of us at Wheatgrass Pty. Ltd., Dr Wheatgrass is Dr. Chris Reynolds, a family doctor and the founder of our Company.

Dr. Chris developed the wheatgrass extract that forms the main ingredient of our products. He has used the extract successfully in clinical trials and for many thousands of patients since 1995. He has re-discovered the therapeutic power of wheatgrass that first came to light in modern times in the 1930's. Leading the resurgence of wheatgrass healing around the world, his life's mission is to make his wheatgrass extract available and affordable to everyone.

    3. What is thalassaemia and what can wheatgrass do for the condition?

Thalassaemia is an inherited blood condition that results in the production of abnormal hemoglobin, the molecules in the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body. Many of these patients require lifelong, usually monthly, blood transfusions and various drugs to help remove excess iron from the body. There are millions of sufferers worldwide.

Wheatgrass has been shown to increase the "transfusion gap" in some of these patients i.e. the length of time required between blood transfusions.

    4. Is Dr Wheatgrass supporting medical research?

We are only a small company, but we have contributed to medical research in a number of ways.

    Thalassemia

Thalassemic patients suffer from an inherited blood disorder that adversely affects the structure of hemoglobin, the molecule responsible for carrying oxygen around the body. There are a number of different types of this disorder and many patients require regular blood transfusions, often every three or four weeks, throughout their lives.

In 2005, scientists at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia discovered that our wheatgrass extract can significantly enhance the production of foetal haemoglobin in human clone cells. This could lead to reduction of blood transfusion requirements in thalassaemic patients constituting a significant medical breakthrough.

Dr Wheatgrass is proud to have played an important role in this research.

View thalassemia testimonials and wheatgrass-related research.

    Leprosy Ulcers

Even though they have been treated and "cured" of leprosy by medication, leprosy patients frequently develop skin ulcers, usually on the feet, which can become indolent and don't heal. Some ulcers persist for more than 30 years. To date, no effective medical treatment has been found to heal these ulcers.

By chance, in 2008, we discovered that our Skin Recovery Spray almost healed two ulcers in one of these patients. Subsequently, we funded and and supervised a clinical pilot study using the wheatgrass spray in Indore, India. Preliminary results showed more than 60% of leprous ulcers healed in these patients with significant healing in approximately 80 percent - a remarkable result.

Skin Toxicity From Radiation in Breast Cancer Patients

Deep X-ray therapy for the treatment of breast cancer can be fraught with complications and adverse reactions called "skin toxicity". Essentially, this means that after treatment, the skin becomes inflamed, tends to blister and break down leading to pain, difficulty in management and wound infection. Because of skin toxicity, the patient has to wait much longer between treatments for the skin to recover sufficiently to allow the next treatment. This in turn tends to reduce the patient's chances of recovery.

For over 100 years the inability to successfully manage skin toxicity has been a major management issue, and to date, nothing has been found that can significantly reduce it. Many topical substances have been trialled and tested over the years, but to no avail.

In this controlled, double-blind study performed at the School of Clinical Sciences, Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, 29 breast cancer patients applied either sorbolene (current best practice) or a commercially produced wheatgrass-based cream (Dr Wheatgrass Skin Recovery Cream ) to the irradiated area three times a day from commencement of radiotherapy.

The researchers determined that "the wheatgrass extract delays the severity of acute radiation skin toxicity" and, on the basis of their results, recommended "a larger multicentre randomised trial." ( Read full article offsite )

    Second Degree Burns

Our wheatgrass extract demonstrated rapid healing and pain relief in second degree burns compared with standard, industry-wide recommended treatment with silver sulfadiazine which does little if anything for pain or to prevent infection. This recently published study was supported financially by Dr Wheatgrass. We also provided the wheatgrass extract used in the study.

    5. Can you take too much wheatgrass?

Yes, you can, and many do every day when it is actually unnecessary. A little wheatgrass goes a long way.

Some people may develop mild nausea and/or diarrhea if they drink too much wheatgrass juice or Supershots. It is best to not take more than 5mls. daily - and it will still work well for you.

    6. How do Dr Wheatgrass Supershots differ from fresh wheatgrass juice?

    There are two main differences.

First, the wheatgrass sprout extract we use contains much higher levels of antioxidants compared with freshly juiced wheatgrass.

Secondly, juicing does not extract all bioactive material from the wheatgrass leaves. A significant amount remains in the fibre which does not get absorbed into the body. By comparison our extraction process, which takes several months, yields almost 100% return of bioactives.

There are other differences. For example the stability of Supershots compared with fresh juice enables you to take your daily wheatgrass "shot" any time and any place. It is ideal for the traveller or shift-worker and many others who do not have access to a juice bar or are unable to cultivate their own grass.

Supershots are shelf-stable for at least two years at room temperature. Fresh wheatgrass juice only lasts a few days if refrigerated.

    7. Please provide a brief history of wheatgrass healing.

The history of wheatgrass healing goes back thousands of years. However, more recently, in the 1930’s in the United States there was substantial scientific research into the nutritional and other properties of cereal grasses. Numerous uses were found using wheatgrass and other cereal grasses for various medical and surgical treatment.

In the 1970’s, Ann Wigmore started the wheatgrass juicing craze in the United States which ultimately led to a huge, nutrition-based industry which continues to grow worldwide.

    8. How much wheatgrass or Supershots should I take each day?

As we're dealing with a herbal extract, this question can not be answered exactly, but in my very broad experience of working with wheatgrass since 1995, it has become clear that "less is best". Not because of risk, but because the effects of wheatgrass tend to be more effecitve if taken or applied sparingly.

2.5 to 5 mls (one teaspoonful) of Supershots a day (or preferably, on alternate days) for an adult, half that amount for young children and two or three drops daily for infants generally works well. In the elderly, it is best to give half the standard dose.

Please view this You Tube video where I explain in detail how to get the best out of oral wheatgrass.

    9. I have an allergy to wheat, is wheatgrass safe for me to use?

Wheat allergies are usually due to gluten which comes from the actual wheat seed. Our wheatgrass extract is produced from young, vital wheatgrass sprouts before the new wheat seed is formed. Dr Wheatgrass Supershots are therefore gluten-free.

Please note: If you are concerned about wheat allergies, we recommend you consult your doctor/allergist or nutritional consultant before adding anything new to your diet, including Dr Wheatgrass Supershots.

    10. What research is available on the therapeutic effects of wheatgrass?

A large body of medical and scientific research regarding the therapeutic benefits of wheatgrass and other cereal grasses has accumulated since the early 1930’s. ( View journal abstracts )

If you search under "Chlorophyll" and "Chlorophyllin" you will find numerous studies and reports. However, as Dr. Chris Reynolds, our Medical Director says, "Chlorophyll is highly unlikely to have any biological activity in humans."

Science doesn't seem to have registered that fact, and continues researching chlorophyll to see what makes it tick.

    11. How is wheatgrass extract made?

Our extract is derived from freshly cut, young, vital wheatgrass sprouts. We then use a secret process that enables almost 100% retention of bioactives resulting in a stable extract that lasts for many years.

A processing cycle takes about three months to complete.

    12. Doesn’t wheatgrass have to be consumed fresh in order to maximise its nutritional benefits?

    No, not at all.

Much of wheatgrass marketing attributes the health-giving properties of wheatgrass juice to its nutritional content and chlorophyll. However, my view differs considerably.

In 1995, I discovered that chlorophyll most likely has little or no biological activity in humans. You can read more about this on my Wheatgrass Healing website.

    14. Why aren't Supershots green?

Supershots are made from a highly concentrated extract derived from young wheatgrass sprouts. This extract is a deep brown colour, not green. It is brown because there is no chlorophyll remaining in the extract.

    24. Can wheatgrass influence infertility?

It has been known since the 1930's that wheatgrass and other cereal grasses contain a potent fertility factor, at least in laboratory animals. ( More information ) There is also laboratory evidence that wheatgrass stimulates the production of fertility hormones in females as well as males i.e. prolactin and gonadotrophin.

Some women attest to reduction of FSH levels after taking Supershots. Also, there have been some reports from males who have experienced quite rapid increases in their sperm counts.

I can vouch for the fact that I have seen a significant number of "infertile" women conceive after taking wheatgrass regularly. One patient in particular, after 9 years of trying to conceive, did so about one month after taking wheatgrass daily.

    25. Does taking wheatgrass interact with Warfarin?

Theoretically, the Vitamin K in fresh wheatgrass juice could interact with warfarin. I have never known or heard of anyone, including my own patients, who ever had a change in their coagulation profile (blood tests) by taking wheatgrass regularly.

In fact, when these patients bruise, applying any of the Dr Wheatgrass topicals to the overlying skin can help reduce swelling, bleeding and skin discoloration.

    28. How do I treat diabetic foot ulcers with wheatgrass?

The best product for assisting recovery of this problem is the wheatgrass Skin Recovery Spray.

Spray on a very small amount on to the ulcer floor, but only once weekly for best results. Keep the wound covered with a light dressing. Wheatgrass extract contains potent, but safe, bioactives, so it is important not to overtreat any kind of ulcer or skin wound. Apply a light dressing after spraying.

In a week or two, the ulcer should show signs of debridement, i.e. removal of dead tissue and re-vitalisation of the ulcer floor due to the return of blood circulation. This is crucial for the ulcer to heal or to prevent potential amputation. Do your best to persevere because wheatgrass can heal these ulcers even when they have been present for a number of years.

    29. How does the potency of the Supershots compare to wheatgrass juice?

Because it is highly concentrated, the wheatgrass extract used in all Dr Wheatgrass products is considerably more potent than other forms of wheatgrass - juiced, powdered or tablet form.

Research indicates that it contains approximately 25% higher levels of antioxidants than fresh juice. Supershots are also shelf stable for at least 2 years unrefrigerated.

    30. How does wheatgrass work?

No one really knows the answer to this question. There are a number of theories.

For instance, in laboratory animals, it has been shown that cereal grass stimulates production of Growth Hormone in the pituitary gland. In turn, Growth Hormone leads to increased levels of Insulin Growth Factor – 1 (IGF-1).

This factor has multiple physiological effects on the human body. For instance, it acts directly on skin cells controlling rate of growth, rate of cell division and maintenance of cell survival.

    Also, it aids:

    • Immunomodulation ("normalisation" of damaged cells and tissues)
    • Bone growth
    • Protein synthesis in muscle and other tissue
    • Antioxidant effects
    • Enhances fat metabolism to reduce weight
    • Stabilizes blood glucose
    • Preserves nerve cell function
    • Joint protection
    • Antiatherosclerotic effects
    • Enhances immunity
    • Restores skin thickness
    • In ageing, they help delay frailty, muscle atrophy, relative obesity, and increased frequency of fractures.

In due course, I am certain this extraordinarily complicated puzzle will be solved.

    33. I am using Dr Wheatgrass spray for my topical steroid withdrawal and it's making a difference. Shouldn't I be taking the Supershots as well?

Ideally, one should combine taking wheatgrass while applying wheatgrass extract to topical steroid damaged skin. Because of the additional cost, I usually recommend using just the spray first because often it can work well by itself. Then, if the eczema remains refractory to the spray, then I suggest adding the Supershots. It may take several months to see improvement, and perseverance (and considerable willpower) often helps sufferers through this ordeal, which it is in most cases.

What wheatgrass appears to do is assist the recovery of the skin's structure and functions (of which there are many), including restoring the skin's immune status. This can help in reducing inflammatory flares when steroid applications are gradually reduced. Adding oral wheatgrass (e.g. Supershots) tends to augment the recovery process by strengthening one's immune system.

    34. I sometimes get a little dizzy after taking wheatgrass, however, my sight is okay and I feel fine. Is this something to worry about?

A kind of dizziness can sometimes occur in some individuals after taking wheatgrass in any form, but it usually settles quite soon afterwards. If it causes concern, you should stop taking it.

The exact cause of these symptoms is unknown, but it is possible that bioactives in wheatgrass influence the brain in some way which suggests that it crosses what is known as the blood-brain barrier and finds its way into the brain tissue.

    35. Is it safe to apply the Dr Wheatgrass topicals around the eyes?

Yes, the products are quite safe to use around the eye, but avoid contact with the surface of the eye itself.

Also, because wheatgrass is catalytic in its effect and the bioactives contained in it appear to be rapidly absorbed through the skin, it is best to use it sparingly wherever it's applied.

Hint: If the eye itself is inflamed and/or painful, you can help relieve pain by applying a little wheatgrass extract/juice/cream over the eyelid. This can often help relieve pain until you have obtained further medical advice and assistance.

    37. Is there any use for the wheatgrass pulp that is left over from juicing?

I haven't used the pulp or fresh wheatgrass juice on patients so I can't give an informed response. I have however heard and read of a number of reports of healing using the juice. For instance in the United States in the1930's, wheat and other cereal grass extracts were used for the effective treatment of sinusitis. This was in the pre-antibiotic days when sinus infections frequently spread to the brain often causing fatal meningitis.

In one study of 2,000 patients, the pulp derived from juicing cereal grasses was inserted into the patients' sinus cavities and all of them recovered.

    39. What if you're allergic to consuming wheat? Would applying it to your skin have the same impact?

Most wheat allergies are caused by gluten. Gluten comes from the wheat seed itself. The wheatgrass extract used in our products comes from young wheatgrass sprouts before the wheat seed has started to develop, and laboratory tests show gluten is not present in the extract. However, some people can develop skin allergies to any topical application. These can occur, but in my 20 years plus experience of using wheatgrass therapeutically, they have been rare.

Dr Wheatgrass skin applications differ as far as the cosmetic "feel" goes so it usually comes down to personal preference which one you use or prefer.

Research, feedback from users and other sources of information tell us that there is not a lot of difference in effectiveness between one skin product and another. Many people prefer cream-based skin applications which is fine for cosmetic and many skin condition treatments, but this is not always the best option to take.

    43. Which product should I use for anal fissure?

Superbalm contains a higher percentage of wheatgrass extract than Skin Recovery Cream, so I usually recommend Superbalm for fissure. However, we are receiving increasing numbers of positive reports from people using the wheatgrass Skin Recovery Spray. This only needs to be sprayed over the anus once on alternate days, not inserted. The same applies to the other wheatgrass topicals - Superbalm and Cream. Bioactives in wheatgrass are rapidly absorbed through the skin, and fissures are almost invariably superficial i.e. close to the anal opening. Therefore, applying any of our topical products on the anus should be effective.

Please note: The reason so many testimonials relate to Skin Recovery Cream is because this product was available several years before Superbalm.
